AOA Leaders Advocate at Capitol for Optometry

AOA President Steven A. Loomis, OD with Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA)

AOA president and immediate past president, Steven A. Loomis, OD, and David A. Cockrell, OD, respectively, took to the US Capitol in December to personally meet with lawmakers in DC about optometry’s priority issues.

Drs. Loomis and Cockrell’s visit included meetings with:

  • A White House official in the president’s Office of Management and Budget about optometry’s primary care role and other AOA priorities;
  • Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Georgia, lead sponsor of the Dental and Optometric Care Access Act (HR 3323);
  • Sens. Michael Bennet, D-Colorado, and Cory Gardner, R-Colorado, urging support of S. 898 on optometry’s eligibility for the National Health Service Corps; and,
  • David H. Reid, MD, US Postal Service national medical director, solidifying optometry’s role as the eye health and vision care authority for postal employees and their families.
