State Board of Optometry Meeting Considers Weighty Issues

Last week, the State Board of Optometry met to consider several controversial issues on the agenda. COA members may be interested in the following:

Technology upgrades - The State Board of Optometry has upgraded its computer systems and doctors of optometry are encouraged to submit all initial and renewal license applications, including their main optometrist license, BOLs, SOLs and FNPs - online. For more information, click here.

Online refraction - The board approved an outreach campaign along with a brochure (located on pages 118-119 of the meeting packet) to educate the public about limitations of online refractions. The board also voted to approach the Medical Board about requiring a "black box" warning on the website and any prescriptions given to patients who are only tested for refractive error online. The warning would advise consumers that the refraction does not replace a total eye health exam and conditions that cause potentially serious health problems will not be detected. It would also indicate that the refraction is only for the purpose of an eyeglasses prescription and that it is strongly urged that the consumer see an optometrist or ophthalmologist for a comprehensive eye exam. COA testified that it is COA's opinion that online refractions are illegal in California and urged the board to take enforcement action to prevent consumer harm.

TPA mandate - The board voted to look into putting forward a proposal to require all optometrists to become TPA certified by a certain date.

Board seeking subject matter experts - Contribute to the profession of optometry by becoming a subject matter expert and assisting in the Board of Optometry's Law Exam Workshops. Two March workshops still have spots available. For more information, click here.
